Kuwaiti Deputy Foreign Minister Khaled Al-Jarallah affirmed that Arab NATO has been proposed and the Arab countries are weighting the pros and cons of the plan.
The Kuwaiti diplomat made the remarks on Monday at a presser, according to Kuwait’s state-owned News Agency KUNA.
“On the subject of a US-proposed Arab alliance similar to NATO, Al-Jarallah said his country had submitted several proposals of similar nature in the Middle East, indicating that the US and Kuwait will hold talks to discuss the nature of such strategic entity,” reads the news relayed by KUNA.
Saudi Arabia and five other Persian Gulf Arab states, with Egypt and Jordan, are in talks to set up an alliance that would be backed by US with aim to contain a so-called Iran threat.
“The Trump administration's bid to create a new security and political alliance with rich Arab countries is aimed at exploiting their wealth and expanding the unwanted US presence in the strategic region,” said Alaeddin Boroujerdi, a member of Iranian Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission on Sunday.
